I find myself conflicted. In alot of ways I emulate republican thinking and rationale, however, I do agree with Bibby here.
Personally, I feel that our countries first and foremost obligation is to our future generations. You can never beat this horse enough, but ensuring our present helps to ensure our future. Education is the main responsibility that our government has in making our future a place where the ability, capacity, and compassion necessary to care for those in our country that cannot care for themselves. Now we run into the problems that arise due to our "right here, right now" capitalistic ideals. Only those who seem to be productive, or have the good fortune to have the option to be productive in a way in which they can live a comfortable life, seem to be too busy taking care of themselves and those around them. Sadly, when minority groups request help in order to help compete with others of better fortune, or become so impoverished that the government is pushed into helping them, it breeds animosity between them and your shirking middle class society.
I pity the middle class. They are too successful to get government help, but seldom ever make enough money, or have a job secure enough where they can feel safe. Not as much as the lower class, but certainly enough, the middle class has to either sink or swim in this world today.
I could rattle on and on about my opinion of natural selection as it pertains to humans, my thoughts on those with diminished mental capacities, abortion, and just about anything of controversy; but I will save the time by saying I am a walking, talking pile of contradictions. I will say one thing one minute, only to tweak it the next, and before you know it I've smashed Gerard's light-up yoda and have rendered myself an incoherent mass on the floor. Drooling.
That is not what this is all about though.... What this is about is the ability to help others. Believe me we have the ability to do it, but as most Americans (myself included), the best thing in the world would be for us to be left alone to live our own little lives and be as happy as clams without having to worry about anything, that is, until it happens to us. I cannot blame us. But...I do feel that it is wrong somewhere. And we should help others.
Where to start? Well, on an international level, nowhere. Although wheeling and dealing with other, poorer, countries has made us incredibly stinking rich (either for capitalism or natural resources), the problems at home will not solve themselves while our primary sights are set on places far away. Fix home first, on a national level, on a community level, on a home level.
I love communism, I love the idea of the utopian society. Great on paper, but people just cannot live that way. People are social beings who need the chance to do individuals as well as one of a collective. Our system is very flawed, but every system devised by man will be. We need to make the best of what we have.
Now, in order to end this on a cliche' note, I will say three things that I feel are true, and although I do not practice them all the time (the first two), if we all just gave it a chance, at least sometimes, we all can help eachother, just a little.
1. The golden rule: I am by no means religious, but treating people the way in which you feel you should be treated is as simple as it gets
2. Everything IS situational: Listen and learn and try to suspend your judgement of others until you have heard everything. Hey, I really have little problem with how you feel towards someone just as long as you know what they are about (sure in the end you might break rule 1, but this is a system devised by me, a human, it's gonna have some loopholes)
3. This is not a rule, but it is the simplest answer to people stupid enough to not understand why other countries hate us. You can look at it one of two ways: way one is to see america as the hero who is elevated only to be torn down by those who either evny them or have helped them rise to thier status, way two is america is a bully and people hate bullies. Sure, minor differences between the two explanations, but if your too stupid to not concern yourself with why we are not looked at favorably in the rest of the world, you probably have not been able to read one work i have just written, you stupid illiterate bastard. America is either #4 or #16 in world literacy rates, anything but #1 with what our country has to offer is unacceptable. I sincerely believe it is not a right to live your life a moron.
None of this shit makes sense now that i read it over. Oh well. Oh, and Gerard, someday you will be old, and unless you strike it rich (and you know just as well as me, that neither of us will ever be rich) your gonna need that helping hand.
Blah Blah Blah.....i think ill just read my book and shut up now.
